The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Staff Education SIG was established in 1992.
Staff Education SIG Mission Statement
The mission of the Staff Education SIG is to promote excellence in staff education in oncology nursing by supporting the ONS mission statement. Furthermore, the Staff Education SIG will:
- develop products, services, opportunities and a knowledge base that promote excellence in oncology nursing;
- increase resources in order to ensure the continued growth and strength of ONS.
Goals
- Provide increased access to professional continuing education on the educational process.
- Develop and implement educational strategies that enhance the diverse roles of cancer nurses as educators.
- Strengthen collaboration with external organizations and corporations.
- Ensure the continued growth and strength of ONS by increasing Staff Education SIG membership, ONS Chapters and providing SIG membership with leadership development.
Activities
The Staff Education SIG has chosen to fulfill its mission and goals through activities such as identifying national and regional CE programs targeted for CE providers and staff educators, and communicating about such programs to SIG members. The SIG is also developing a mentoring program for its members whose primary role may not be education. SIG members are available to serve as a resource to ONS chapters and has completed collaboration with the Chemotherapy SIG on the Chemotherapy Scenarios. The SIG is committed to developing topics for presentation at ONS educational events.
Benefits/Communication
The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Staff Education SIG leaders regularly communicate with SIG members through written communiques and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles related to staff education and oncology nursing issues, announcements of educational events, and reports on SIG projects and activities.
Membership Requirements
All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
